CORRECTION(Ran Jan. 31, 2008):Front Page: A story on Page A10 Wednesday incorrectly attributed districtwide enrollment changes to 220-student Oakridge High School. Enrollment in the entire Oakridge School District fell about 35 percent in the past decade, from 961 to 620 students.
OAKRIDGE - Who knew? For awhile, not even Superintendent-Principal Don Kordosky realized that little Oakridge High School ranked among the nation's best in a list published last month by U.S. News & World Report. He learned through the grapevine, and well after the fact, that the 220-student school attained "Bronze Medal" status based on a study that examined how well schools serve disadvantaged as well as academically advanced students.
"It was a complete surprise - they did not contact us in any way," said Kordosky, who heard about the honor from the superintendent of another small Oregon district, Dayville, which also received a bronze ranking in the Dec. 15 publication.
Kordosky stressed, however, that it's not news to him that Oakridge High does a good job preparing students for college, a criteria the news magazine set out to measure in its first-ever high school rankings issue.
