Can the Oscars retain their relevance amid concerns about decency, predetermined outcomes and diminished audience interest?

And, remember, that's allowing that mere movie awards have any real cultural relevance in the first place.

Hollywood's Academy Awards are presented today in a ceremony to be broadcast live from the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles at 7:30 p.m. on WLS-TV Channel 7 - that is, if you count a little TiVo-like tape delay as "live."

Yet that's just one of the many elements complicating this year's Oscars - some of which are Hollywood's own doing, some of which it has no control over.
