Even the homeless bring it up.

"You've got all that money from the Kroc foundation. Why isn't there more food?" they ask Jim Bracey nearly every night as the Salvation Army worker brings meals to the homeless in parks and under viaducts of Chicago's South and Southwest sides.

But the $1.5 billion to $2 billion super-sized bequest - no one knows the value yet for sure - to the charity by the estate of late McDonald's heiress Joan Kroc won't do anything for Bracey's tired fleet of three cargo vans as it faces the highest demand for food in years.

Nor will it help any of the 13,700 people who sought help last year from the Salvation Army's Corps Community Center in Elgin. That the center's holiday donations were down nearly $50,000 from the year before - while nearly 1,000 more people sought help - makes no difference.
