Several years ago I attended the Illinois Center for the Book's annual dinner in Springfield and heard Gwendolyn Brooks speak.

As a part of the speech, she read one of her newer poems, "White Girls are Peculiar People."

In the poem, the qualities of white girls' hair were mentioned, especially how it could be tossed around.

I knew that this could be fascinating to blacks. In the 1960s, I was an elementary school librarian in a largely black area of Atlanta. The children loved my hair; it was so different and fascinating to them....
