Kyle Sorensen will always be able to look back and smile on his seventh-place medal that he earned in the 50-yard freestyle at Saturday's IHSA boys swimming finals at Evanston High School.

The irony here is that Sorensen's lifetime-best time of 20.97 was fast enough to get him the second-place medal but after a mishap with his goggles on Friday, he swam in the consolation heat and smoked everyone.

"My start was great - and my goggles finally stayed on," said Sorensen. "As soon as I took that first stroke, I was on top of the water."

At least Sorensen has one more shot next year and regardless of what the medal or scoreboard says, he still knows and so do a lot of other swimmers.

"I know what I did - the second-fastest time in state...
