NORMAL - There were no tears.

It took a herculean effort by top-ranked and undefeated Decatur St. Teresa to defend its ranking and unbeaten record Saturday night.

And that's because Hampshire continued to surprise and impress everyone in the Illinois Class A girls basketball world except itself.

But in the end, No. 1 St. Teresa was able to become the first Class A girls team to win a state championship undefeated since Carlyle in 1997 as the Bulldogs outlasted the Whip-Purs 59-50 in the state championship game before a loud and spirited crowd at Redbird Arena.
