Editor: How and when did you get into nursing informatics?

Suzanne Beckett: "I worked as a staff nurse for approximately 25 years when our initial software technology was introduced to the staff which resulted in a notice being posted requesting volunteers to assist in the implementation of order entry. I applied for the position 12 years ago and have not stopped since. My primary employer became part of a health system, which has since resulted in multisite implementations. The Niagara Health System is now a part of LHIN 4 (Local Health Integrated Network) in Southern Ontario."

Editor: What are some highlights of your informatics experience?

Suzanne Beckett: "I have enjoyed many experiences, including both successful and difficult situations. Currently involved with the implementation of HOBIC--Health Outcomes for Better Information and Care--an Ontario Ministry of Health project (formerly known as Nursing and Health Outcomes) which assesses patient outcomes to produce better data, support accountability and evidence based decision making. This project will be introduced to our 2,000 nursing staff in the next several years. Patients are assessed with the same queries on both admission and discharge and their responses are submitted electronically to the Ministry of Health--HOBIC database for electronic trending and...
