Year-end profit statements provided strong evidence that the economy turned a corner in 2003, and Southeast Michigan was included.

As of Thursday, 45 local publicly traded companies besides the automakers had reported earnings for the fourth quarter, which ended Dec. 31. Of those, 60 percent reported better earnings than they did for the same quarter in 2002. And 76 percent reported profits....
