After September 11, 2001, the more porous border resulting from implementation of the Free Trade and North American Free Trade agreements stood paradoxically opposed to calls for a more secure boundary. This border "paradox" has given further impetus for scholars to view and examine the U.S.-Canada borderlands as regions of transfer and confrontation, and convergence and divergence. In this effort, researchers are more and more employing a borderlands approach, because it offers an interpretive framework for comparative research and allows new insights into the evident similarities and subtle differences that both unite and divide the countries. For the most part, the resulting studies focus on local and regional scales, and New England and the Maritime Provinces certainly follows this trend.
