Friday witnessed the U.S. trade deficit surging to the highest level in 14 months. The Commerce Department attributed the deficit to an increase in oil imports while the weak dollar boosted exports to another record high. Much of the downswing was focused in China, where the U.S. deficit for the first 11 months totaled $237.5 billion this year, the highest annual imbalance ever recorded with a single country. Further adding to investor's unease, Merrill Lynch may take a $15 billion hit from the dull, subprime mortgage investments.
