The performance is particularly strong given that the obesity debate continues to dominate the media agenda. But it seems it will take more than that to stop the Great British Public treating themselves.
NisaChill buying controller Trevor Standing says cake is never going to be a healthy option, but people will still want indulgent products.
"Even if people are being healthy for most the week, they still want to treat themselves at some stage," he says. "That could be an ice cream of a cake. It's a mature category but it's showing good growth."
From even a glance at the top 20 cake lines it's easy to see a category dominated by one man, with the name Mr Kipling appearing on 13 of the products.
