For investors today, commodities are a hot topic, if not necessarily always 'hot' in performance terms. Academic studies have made the historical case for commodities investment (diversifier, inflation hedge and shock insurance), but today this is overshadowed by excited debate on topics such as the commodities supercycle, the rise of the BRICs, and demand for ethanol and its components.
Investor interest has been piqued and the number of products on offer has soared, with today's investor facing a dizzying array of index products, enhanced index products, commodities ETFs with minimum investments of as low as 1, commodities equities funds and commodities funds of funds, to name just a selection.
