Forty years ago, Mr. McGuire offered a one-word tip to Dustin Hoffman's character Benjamin Braddock in "The Graduate."

"Plastics."

Retailers this year can only nod in agreement with the 1967 film classic's unintended providence: Consumers embraced plastic like never before, with holiday gift card sales estimated to hit $26.3 billion for 2007. That's 5.5 percent of the overall $474.5 billion projected to be spent by American holiday shoppers.

"I just know I've ordered a lot of extra gift cards this year," said Celeste McKittrick, manager of Kohl's department store at Springfield's Gateway Mall.

Customers are citing convenience and practicality for a continuing surge in the purchase of gift cards. Retailers are happy to oblige.
