I want to raise three points in response to the article in the Dec. 22 Register-Guard on the civil suit being raised against the Jasper Mountain treatment facility for traumatized, abused children.

First, all of the children at Jasper Mountain have suffered abuse in their family. Many of us fail to appreciate the impact of child abuse on children. Being sexually, physically or emotionally abused by one's trusted caregiver in childhood is the most devastating experience a child can have, and is highly disruptive to that child's social and emotional development.

Children who suffer these experiences will continue to struggle with close, intimate and trusting relationships; those struggles potentially continue the rest of their lives. They react to what we might regard as minor...
