Sarah Whitfield compiled 18 points, nine rebounds and six steals Friday to lead South Eugene's girls basketball team to a 53-49 victory over Westview in the Interstate Shootout at Lake Oswego High School.

Elyse Barnes added 14 points for the Axemen (5-4), who advance to the tournament's fifth-place game today at noon. Jackie Nared's 16 points led Westview.

South Eugene never trailed in the game, but its lead was down to one when Olivia Roberts' two free throws made it 52-49 with 34.6 seconds left. MacKenzie Kerins then blocked Nared's three-point attempt with eight seconds left, and Barnes made 1-of-2 free throws to account for the final score.
