Article Excerpt Come election time, and given the argy-bargy of Australia's state-federal political system, education can easily find itself becoming a political flavour of the month. It's difficult to say exactly when federal election campaigns begin these days since both the Coalition government and Labor opposition seem to be in campaign mode most of the time.
The current federal election campaign, which seems to have been going on for an awfully long time, warmed up in the new year when the opposition leader, Kevin Rudd, staked his party's electoral claim on education, amongst other things, identifying human capital--which is a fancy name for education and training--as one key policy matter. As Rudd put it in February, 'Education now becomes a core part of the economic debate.' Any detail on Labor's 'education revolution' has been principally in economic terms, possibly in the belief that 'declining real investment in higher education and flat investment in ... education,' as Rudd described it in parliament, is the Coalition's soft spot.
