The Martha Graham Dance Company celebrated its 80th anniversary with an ambitious two-week season at The Joyce Theater. With three set programs and four special performances (including a Saturday afternoon "Teen Matinee"), and an ideal stage for both Isamu Noguchi's spare sets and Graham's powerful yet intimate dramas, the season was a time to take stock of Janet Eilber's artistic direction, after a period of company turmoil.

The results are mixed. Some works, including Appalachian Spring, Sketches from "Chronicle", and Diversion of Angels, look newly minted, as though Eilber has gone over them phrase by phrase to get rid of false notes and mannerisms.
