"Making space dance" is how Frederic Flamand has described Metapolis II. The evening-length ensemble work, with choreography by Flamand and design by renowned architect Zaha Hadid, made its North American premiere at the New York State Theater. Shoving Hadid's crinkled structures into new configurations, the dancers of Ballet National de Marseille reshaped the stage--their utopian city--creating mounds, bridges, obstacles, inlets, traps, and springboards for transcendence. A background video zoomed in--Google Earth-style--on parcels of urban landscape.
