In the 1960s, when I was studying at the Merce Cunningham Studio and then dancing with his company from 1965 to 1968, the Cunningham dancers already had a reputation--which persists--for being technically flawless. Since the dancing was not "about" anything but the movement itself, absolute clarity was quintessential to its full expression, and you couldn't mask a wobble with a dramatic flourish.

Cunningham technique is elegantly simple, though by no means easy. "I'm not really concerned with style," Merce declares, as we chat at the back of the studio after a company class he's taught. "There are so many movements that are common to any style, because we all have two legs, two arms, and a head, and they move the way they move, but the variety within that is endless. I'm concerned with how to do something. And I try to push it as far as I can."
