When dancers retire they become many things. Few, however, become kings.
In one of the stranger twists of art and geopolitics, last month the King of Cambodia, Norodom Sihamoni, a former ballet dancer, choreographer, and teacher, marked his third year on the throne.
The story of how King Sihamoni, 54, fell in love, not just with dance, but with ballet--a form as disciplined and codified as classical Cambodian dance but far removed from its slow Eastern intricacies--is also a story of the tumultuous modern history of Cambodia.
