Rick Tilman has been writing about Thorstein Veblen for 35 years. The impressive depth and breadth of his learning is displayed in his latest book, Thorstein Veblen and the Enrichment of Evolutionary Naturalism. His thesis is that evolutionary naturalism is the unifying foundation on which Veblen's work rests. Naturalism is the idea that nothing supernatural exists; consequently the universe is not teleological and humans have no special place in it. By using it in areas of inquiry where it had never been used before, Veblen enriched evolutionary naturalism "metaphysically and metatheoretically, politically and socially, culturally, aesthetically and morally, heuristically and historically" (p. 295).
