With prime vineyard land in Chile going for a mere $5,000 per acre, it's no wonder that Chilean wineries are able to offer good quality wines at bargain basement prices. During our visit to Chile in October, we were particularly impressed with the wines of Santa Rita, Montes and Vina Los Vascos. In general, the reds showed beautiful, rich color, and the whites--particularly the Sauvignon blancs from Casablanca Valley--displayed a crisp acidity that reminded us of New Zealand. No wonder California producers like Franciscan Estates (Veramonte) wanted to get in on the action.
