Clubber's not cute in the strictest sense of the word, but when the nearly foot-long Mali uromastyx stands up on her little back legs and paws on the front of her terrarium for attention, she's pretty hard to resist. Even for a lizard.

Dave Mancino, owner of Reptile Kingdom in west Eugene, who describes Clubber's looks as "kind of like a turtle without a shell," admits he hasn't resisted a reptile since he was a tot.

"I got my first California desert tortoise when I was about 6," Mancino said. "I got it at Newberry's (five-and-dime) in Westchester - my home town - in Southern California."
