The key to maintaining a healthy self-esteem is the proper frame of reference.

For example, I am the best music writer between the ages of 25 and 30 at The Register-Guard. That's a hands down, irrefutable fact that I am proud of.

Similarly, in real life, Cool Nutz doesn't claim to be the next Jay-Z. But he is the best at doing what he does.

So when the Portland rapper, also known as Terrance Scott, proclaimed himself "King Cool Nutz," he's basically saying he is the ruler of a self-made kingdom.

"For what I do, I'm the king at that," he said. "To me, there are a lot of artists that are better than me and better rappers, whatever; look better, rap a better show.

"But in terms of me being Cool Nutz, there is nobody that does that better."

Scott reigns over Northeast Portland hip-hop. He's relentless self-promoter, a record label owner and a tireless collaborator, manager and producer.

After four years, he is finally releasing a new solo project. It's called - what else? - "King Cool Nutz."

And the 35-year-old, who's been at it for more than 15 years, has declared the new work his masterpiece.
