Oppose media consolidation

Our media, in the hands of a few large corporations, have deprived us of real news nationally, an eclectic cultural selection and forums for local concerns. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin's latest push to allow even more consolidation of radio, TV, and newspaper in the hands of these five corporations will further erode any hope of a fair exchange of ideas and information, both locally and nationally, beyond what mass media deem fit for us to know.

The airwaves belong to the public. They are not being used to our best advantage. Please tell your congressmen before Dec. 12 that we oppose further media consolidation and to support Senate Bill 2332 and prevent the gutting of FCC rules.

Use hemp to make biofuels

I have been reading of the pros and cons of using corn for biofuel. It makes a very inefficient source.

The whole argument could be eliminated if there were a thriving hemp industry in this country. Beyond the plethora of uses for hemp fiber, all the vegetable matter could be used as a major ingredient in biofuel.

It is a much more efficient source, and land could be turned over to unemployed logging industry people who have lost work due to the decline in the timber industry. We could even make a dent in the unemployment figures for our state.

Hemp was made illegal due to the textile industry creating nylon and other synthetic fibers in the 1930s....
