A potential HIV vaccine recently failed a key clinical trial, and top government and drug-industry scientists also are investigating whether Merck's STEP vaccine can increase some people's chances of catching the virus that causes AIDS.

"We're really trying very hard to understand the data more fully and completely. There's a lot of work ongoing," said Nalini Saligram, spokeswoman for Merck, the company that co-sponsored the vaccine trial along with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) and the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN).

The vaccine trial - which began in 2004 and involved 3,000 participants between the ages of 18 and 45, who were at risk of HIV infection based on their behavior - ended in September of this year with the determination that the vaccine decreased neither the chance of HIV infection...
