This is a book that we have been waiting for--for something on the order of twenty-five years. It has its genesis in the late James Hinkle's plan to construct a multi-volume glossary to the works of Faulkner and Hemingway, a project he intended to serve as general editor, while compiling the Hemingway volume on The Sun Also Rises himself. Hinkle's notes were legendary, reportedly filling a card catalog case that he bought from the San Diego State University Library when it changed to a digital catalog. Hinkle was tireless in accumulating information; I can testify that scholars with an interest in The Sun Also Rises could expect queries from him about almost any aspect of the novel.
