Only a cruel man, versed in wheelmanship, would have built a blind left-hand corner as tough as this one. A tall Armco wall blocks the sightline of the apex curb, and you can't see the sweeping right-hander you'll have to negotiate almost immediately by flicking the car the other way, but that's hardly the point. It's blind, and, when pedaled to bursting, most cars can take it near their engines' redlines in third gear. Not an Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione.
The 444-hp-V8-powered, carbon-bodied Alfa, torn free of the Balocco, Italy, test track's long second-gear bends, just wants to run. Third gear runs out right as you enter the tunnel beneath the high-speed bowl. It's in the next 200 yards that you swear to forgive it any future sins.
The V8 interrupts its bellow with a sharp, urgent crack for a 0.2-second upshift and then demonstrates its full repertoire of timbre changes-and the concrete walls echo every sound wave.
