It was a dry, hot night in mid-October 1991, and I remember sitting on the roof of a friend's apartment building in San Francisco looking across the bay toward the hills of Oakland.

I sat transfixed, watching in horror as the flames jumped from one home to the next, slowly, surely, inexorably. It was an unbelievable vista of orange, red and yellow. The homes burned like dried pine logs heaved on a campfire.
