Guardian Building purchase OK'd

The Wayne County Commission passed a proposal Thursday to authorize the county to acquire the Guardian Building, a parking structure and a vacant office building for $33.5 million.

The purchase from Detroit-based Sterling Group comprises $14.5 million for the Guardian Building, $2 million for the four-story Detroit Savings and Loan Building at 511 Woodward and $17 million for the 1,450-space First Street Parking Garage.

The county still needs board approval on a financing plan for the acquisition, Tim Johnson, director of public information for the Wayne County Commission, said. County Executive Robert Ficano has said the county plans to finance the deal with revenue bonds.
