After climbing the ranks in the field of computer science from a college co-op program to a software developer, to a project leader for major Department of Defense automated information systems, and to a branch chief, Deborah Dent progressed to become the first African-American and female to serve as a deputy director and first African-American to serve as a director of a Corps of Engineer research laboratory.

As ITL acting directing in Vicksburg, Dent leads one of seven laboratories at the ERDC, which is one of the most diverse organizations in the world.
