Article Excerpt The U.S. Census Bureau released July 1, 2006 subcounty population estimates on June 28, 2007. The report includes estimates for 19,475 incorporated places in the nation.
South Dakota
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Harrisburg had the highest growth rate from 2005 to 2006 for cities with a population of 1,000 or more. It grew at a rate of 31.4% and was followed by Tea (10.9%), Brandon (6.4%), Crooks (4.9%) and Box Elder (3.2%).
Sioux Falls experienced the largest numeric growth with an increase of 2,902 persons, followed by Rapid City (697), Harrisburg (599), Brandon (463), and Brookings (442).
Sioux Falls also continued to be the most populous city in South Dakota with a population of 142,396, followed by Rapid City (62,715), Aberdeen (24,071), Watertown (20,526), and Brookings (18,802).
South Dakota has 308 cities. The cities of Sioux Falls and Rapid City made up 26 percent of South Dakota's total population in 2006. These are the only two cities with a population of 50,000 or more. Sixty-two percent of South Dakota's 308 cities have a population of 500 or less.
