With the exception of a single great blue heron, a pair of mallards and a smattering of songbirds, the wetlands creatures kept to themselves Tuesday morning - wary, perhaps, of the 40-plus visitors traipsing through their habitat.

But they'd left evidence, and that was enough to satisfy many of the first-graders from Prairie Mountain School.

"It's poop," guide Liz Myers told her group, pointing out some nutria droppings aside the West Amazon Creek trail. "And you know what we call it, because we're scientists today? It's scat."
