Jeff Hess thinks his South Eugene girls cross country team could be as good as it was in 2001 when the Axemen won the state title, but that does not mean South will be favored to win another championship.

Jesuit is the team to beat as it seeks its sixth straight state title in the OSAA Class 6A girls cross country championships starting at 2:35 p.m. Saturday at Lane Community College.

"Jesuit would have to completely self-destruct to not win," Hess said.

The Axemen figure to be among the teams contending if the Crusaders can't continue their streak.

"This is the deepest team that we've had," Hess said. "It's interesting that in the years since we won state in 2001, our team has really been stronger each year since then, but the competition has been as well. This is another of those years where we have a very good girls team, and Jesuit might have the best team that's ever been seen in this state."
