VENETA - The Fern Ridge Chamber of Commerce is looking to both the experienced and the experimental this fall as it steps up efforts to expand the business base of this rapidly growing community.

The group hired a familiar face - former Lane County Commissioner Anna Morrison - as its first full-time economic development officer. The chamber is also taking a page from reality TV by holding a Fern Ridge Entrepreneur Contest.

The contest is open to anyone with an idea for establishing a small business in Alvadore, Crow, Elmira, Lorane, Noti, Cheshire, Veneta or Walton. Would-be entrepreneurs have until Nov. 10 to apply. Contestants also must agree to attend three classes to be offered in Veneta this fall by Lane Community College's Small Business Development Center.
