SPRINGFIELD - At an age when most children have only barely started thinking about the transition to middle school, 11-year-old Arelia Sirena already has her sights set on the University of Oregon.

She's even visited some classes with her aunt, including a calculus session that she admits was a bit over her head.

"I'd like to probably study to be a doctor in the emergency room," said Arelia, a poised, engaging fifth-grader at Moffitt Elementary School. "I want to help people."
