SPRINGFIELD - Usually, James Heavirland is the one delivering the scare.

His annual haunted house exhibit has become a relatively well-known local attraction over the past few years, typically drawing hundreds of holiday thrill-seekers to his neighborhood on Halloween night.

But the life-sized freaks and ghouls that inhabit his spooky display can't induce the kind of heart-pounding fright Heavirland experienced Aug. 28 when his house caught fire.
