They say your mind plays more reruns than Seinfeld, the same thoughts popping up time and again each day. Spending a lot of time hiking in the woods only reinforces that theory.

But there are exceptions to that rule. Moments when thoughts, ideas - instincts - kick in from who knows where. At times like that, I simply listen, and comply.

In May, looking for a workout hike, I hit the Eula Ridge trail, off of Highway 58, just east of Milepost 24 across from Lookout Point Lake.

I picked Eula Ridge for two reasons: First, it offers a good workout no matter how far you hike on it and, second, I lost the top of my knife handle up there somewhere on a hike a few weeks earlier.

In my haste to hit the trail, I left my walking stick behind. Normally that wouldn't be a problem, but nothing about this hike would prove to be normal.

A walking stick comes in handy on the steep grades of Eula Ridge, but to be honest, if you're hiking alone in the woods, a walking stick represents more than an occasional crutch.

I ripped through the early switchbacks, and hit a portion of the trail where it levels off...
