Tim Morris enjoyed his evening ritual, hiking up the road from a campsite in Pioneer Gulch a few years back during a hunting trip with his uncle, when night began to fall.
"When it starts getting dark," Morris said, "you start picking up the pace to get back."
That's when the Pleasant Hill hunter heard a noise echo through the woods that he'll never forget.
"It was like a scream, but didn't sound like any animal at all," said Morris, who was packing up his elk camp along the Middle Fork Willamette near Little Pines Opening last week. "And it was followed by an eerie `Hooooo.' "
Morris hot-footed it back to camp and told his uncle. Later that night, as they sat by their campfire, they heard it again. And again. And again. In the trees. Right behind their site.
"It sure made us a bit uncomfortable," Morris said. "We decided it must have been an owl, although we never really knew for sure what it was."
Noises in the woods. It seems almost anyone who has ventured on a hike or two has stories to share.
Most noises, if not all, have reasonable explanations. It's just that not everyone is an expert on the variety of sounds animals make....
