Article Excerpt
Luminary: From Latin luminare, 'a window', from lumin-, lumen, 'light'.

Beginning with Larry Bourne's article in this issue, I am delighted to announce that The Canadian Geographer (TCG)/Le Geographe canadien (LGC) will publish several 'luminary' articles qua 'reflections' over the next two years. For the purposes of this initiative, luminaries are Canadian scholars who have enjoyed stellar research careers in Geography, a constant beacon of light for the rest of us, and who have recently reached the conventional retirement age of 65. The papers are invited and reviewed. The 'mandate' that I have given our luminaries is rather broad, open to much interpretation. Basically, I requested the invited luminaries to provide 'some kind' of integrative, reflective and/or synthetic article that would provide a personalized perspective on their research that is now 40 years or so in the making. These reflections are not meant to be literature reviews nor comprehensive research autobiographies; such a task would be impossible in the space available. Rather, my invitations provide opportunities for our luminaries to reveal and elaborate aspects of their career trajectories in their own words. Doubtless, the luminaries will variously interpret this task, according to distinctive signatures and formats, for example, by adopting an evolutionary perspective on connected streams of thought or by focusing on a current project as an elaboration of previous thinking. Whatever the particular choices are made in this regard, I believe that Luminary Reflections are an exciting initiative for TCG/LGC, of interest and value to us all, in the revelation of research achievements and potential within Geography in Canada and beyond. With international stature, 'our' luminaries are from our Canadian community of geographers who have led, shared and drawn upon our collective endeavours.

I believe that the publication of Luminary Reflections,...
