Truer words couldn't have been written. This is especially true for someone who is transgender and HIV+. And while this article is focused on issues related to legal or societal barriers to the expression of gender identity, it isn't meant to mask legal needs based on other forms of bias. Instead, it is simply meant to explain some of the basic legal issues that people who are transgender face.
Transgender legal issues come in many forms. Our current legal system, while undergoing rapid positive change, is not yet fully addressing them. The consequences of this legal reality are stark. For instance, the respondents in the survey mentioned above reported experiencing discrimination in: employment (50%), public accommodation (38%), housing (32%), health care (31%), police interactions (25%), and access to...
