Article Excerpt Back in 1987 when computers started to become popular among the general public, nobody thought about hackers writing malicious code that could wreak havoc on computers and servers worldwide, costing companies billions of dollars.
Last year, malware (software designed to infiltrate or damage computer systems) cost companies around the world $13.3 billion. That's according to a Computer Economics report in 2007 titled, "Malware Report: The Economic Impact of Viruses, Spyware, Adware, Botnet and Other Malicious Code."
Though the numbers are vast, they are less than damages attributed to hackers in 2005, which totaled $14.2 billion.
The study attributed the decline to anti-malware technology being more widely deployed. Today, virtually all business PCs are protected by antivirus software.
