Driven by the desire to play by their own rules, entrepreneurs Scott Kirkpatrick and Chris Blank created a business in Kirkpatrick's kitchen with a phone, an outdated computer and $20,000 from a home refinance.

In 2006, the advertising and marketing company the partners named Superior Internet Solutions reported revenue of $2.9 million, an 869.5 percent increase since 2003 when the company reported $295,424 in revenue. The growth landed them, among other achievements, a spot this year in Inc. magazine's top 500 companies list, as well as a No. 5 ranking on the San Diego Business Journal's List of Fastest-Growing Private Companies.
