"Don't come here if you're thinking of becoming a professional dancer," said Tisch dance's chair Linda Tarney to a group of students auditioning a few years ago. "Only come if you know you're going to be a dancer." New York University's Tisch School of the Arts doesn't keep any statistics on how many of the 30 dance students they graduate each year get jobs in the field. They simply begin to list the companies that have recently hired Tisch grads: Mark Morris, Doug Varone, Trisha Brown, Richmond Ballet, Ririe-Woodbury, Shen Wei, The Rockettes, Spectrum Dance Theater, Cirque du Soleil, MOMIX, Sean Curran, Jose Limon, Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal, Liz Lerman, and on and on.
What are they putting in that water fountain? It's not super-human strength or flexibility; it's connections. The program offers strong training in both technique and choreography, with courses ranging from Improvisation to Pointe.
