Themostimportantmedicalconsideration for transgender women is the very high prevalence of HIV within their community. In the San Francisco Bay Area, the prevalence rate may be over 80%. Moreover, many of these women are not receiving the medical care that they need and deserve primarily because of discomfort with the medical community itself. Many trans-women (and men) feel judged for who they are, believe that their needs are not understood or taken seriously, and struggle because HIV treatment, care, and support services are geared predominantly towards gay men, and though increasingly toward women, not trans-women.
