After allowing nearly 10 days of massive anti-government protests led by Buddhist monks, Burma's military junta Sept. 25 ordered a ban on demonstrations and a 60-day curfew. However, thousands of people took to the streets the next day, and troops were sent to disperse crowds in the nation's capital Yangon.

Government security forces continued the crackdown with increased brutality Sept. 27 with predawn raids on monasteries and firing shots and tear gas into crowds in Yangon.

Democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was transferred from house arrest to the notorious Insein prison, some media outlets were reporting.

The demonstrations began in mid-August after the military dictatorship ordered an overnight "500-percent increase in fuel prices. The first protests were small and mostly confined to the capital. But when the country's Buddhist clergy took up the cause, it quickly turned into a religious and moral showdown with the country's oppressive military regime.
