Indoor plants now seem to be as necessary to an interior workplace environment as furniture.

"It adds to the decor," said Karen McKie, owner, Green Oak Interioscaping, Jackson. "Beautification is probably the primary reason for indoor plants. It softens the area. It brings a general atmosphere of peacefulness to it."

Indoor plants used to be more of a challenge because of lighting. But most buildings today are built with more light in them. They have more windows and natural light. As a result, the variety of plant choices that will live in an interior environment are greater than before.

McKie said choosing the right plant for indoors is the first step. Choices are more limited than with outdoor plants because indoor plants are limited by light sources.
