Last week's tentative settlement reached between the United Auto Workers and General Motors Corp. helped suppliers avoid serious financial damage and gave stock prices a boost by midweek.

Southfield-based Lear Corp. (NYSE: LEA) began temporary layoffs of 3,000 employees last Monday, but called them back on Wednesday, said Mel Stephens, the company's vice president of communications.

And while production was disrupted at 15 plants, the financial damage was limited.
