The biggest non-issue in last year's Victorian state election was the Green-Liberal preference deal that wasn't. While the fight provided momentary respite from what was otherwise a remorselessly dull election, it cast light on a strain within the mainland Green movement and their supporters in the lead up to the looming federal election later this year.

If the letters to the editor were any guide, the attitude of many Greens' supporters seemed to be that preference deals with the major parties, particularly the Liberals, are a betrayal of Green principles. The Greens, some supporters seemed to think, had sacrificed their integrity and principles by stooping to the grubby politics of backroom deals.
