Thomas Friedman, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author of the pro-globalisation tract The Lexus and the Olive Tree, once wrote in The Age that throughout history, successful social protest movements have had one thing in common: a clear, simple message and objective. Friedman derides anti-globalisation protests, from Seattle's WTO meeting in 1999 to the Genoa G8 summit (and implicitly, Melbourne's S11 and G20) principally for lacking coherence. 'To be against globalisation is to be against so many things that it connotes nothing,' says Friedman.
Admittedly, while linking arms with fellow protestors at S11 there were moments when I wondered what we were about. Would this really help my small manufacturing business, under threat from cheap imports? Could we convince the casino's then owner to pay personal income tax, or make pigs fly?
